Yes, alienware is good, in that they give you a high performance laptop. However, as portable as it may claim to be, they are very, very thick and bulky, and heavy as well. They're also very gaudy, as the lid is covered in angular aluminium (it does a good job of protecting the screen. The rest of it is angular plastic, and the whole thing is covered in LEDs. Alternatively, i have two good travelling gaming laptops:

Razer Blade: World's thinnest. Intel Core i7 @2.2 GHz, 8GB RAM, 512GB mSATA drive, 2GB 765M graphics.

Gigabyte P35K: slightly thicker than the blade, Intel Core i7 @ 2.4GHz, 16GB RAM, 256GB mSATA + 1TB HDD, 2GB 765M graphics, an actual disk drive.

It's worth noting that both of these come with as powerful graphics as...
Alienware has great performance, but a bit pricy, and definitely very bulky. If you want thin+light with good battery life and gaming performance, try the Razer Blade. World's thinnest gaming laptop. However, cooling may be an issue with such a thin chassis.

It's worth noting that both of these come with as powerful graphics as the alienware 14, except much thinner.

I recommend the Gigabyte P25K.

Being entirely fair, though, these are both out of your price range. For sheer budget to performance, the Alienware 14 recommended earlier will suffice. However, here's a decent budget performance laptop:
