New battery, not charging

I bought a new battery and charger for my Acer laptop. I have let it charge for about 12 or so hours. The battery icon on my laptop is still saying, 0% available, (plugged in, charging). Not sure what's going on, and help would be appreciated.

The power supply is obviously working if you can see the onscreen icon.
It could well be that they have given you a defective battery.
You really need a multimeter to test the battery connections on the laptop,if you are getting a voltage there then it is a faulty battery.
