New laptop battery not charging, old one does

Hi,

I have a toshiba sattelite A350D. The battery I got with it when I bought the laptop years ago has nearly withered away and will only hold charge for about 10 minutes before dying. So I decided to buy a new battery, thinking this would solve all my problems. Sadly, this was not the case. The new battery would charge, then not charge, then charge again and so on every 2 seconds. This made the battery not useable. Since my old battery still works I would assume it's the battery's fault and not my laptop/charger. But the strange thing is, if I insert the new battery without the charger, the battery works just fine. I sent the battery back, thinking it was defect and received a new battery. Same problem. I sent that one back and got my money back, ordered from a different site and still have the same problem.

Anyone have any idea's on how to troubleshoot this? I have been googling things (tried shutting down the laptop, holding the power button for a minute while unplugged and no battery and more of these, none work for me sadly)

It sounds like it could be your charger cord. If it is damaged, even if you can't see the damage, it won't be able to charge correctly. Especially if it is turned on while charging as the cord will be trying to do both at the same time.

Hmmm, ok, I have one question then though, why can the charger charge the old battery, but not the new one? If it's broken shouldn't it be unable to charge the old battery as well?

The new battery and the charger, are they OEM or after market? That can make a difference as well.

The charger and the new battery are both after market. I think it's strange however that charger + old battery works, new battery standalone works, but charger + new battery doesn't work....

It gets iffy when you get into after market parts. While they are supposed to work, the standards sometimes just aren't there. OEM is usually more expensive, but then you know the part is made for your device.

that's what I was afraid of... old laptop so not going to find the parts original...

Normally that would be a correct analysis EXCEPT when a battery is finally depleted all of the the battery meter readings goes out of the door. A depleted battery gives out erroneous readings and not to be relied on.

If you are getting another battery, a third, after the first new one doesn't work, is to get the third from a completely different vendor and label, because the same batch may have the same built-in incompatibility as the second.

Best is to get a genuine battery but if you can't, you can't. If there is no physical damage to the charge/cord, my bet is, and that's only a bet, the prob lies with an incompatible battery.

an original battery costs about 300% more than the other, not worth it to me for this specific laptop. The batteries are from seperate vendor's already. Tried it with a different charger (original, from other laptop) and the batteries still don't charge.
