1. What is your budget?

about a grand (ish)

2. What is the size of the notebook that you are considering?

as small as possible. school work spaces are limited and smaller is generally more convienent

3. What screen resolution do you want?

honestly, lower native the better. eye strain causes migraines

4. Do you need a portable or desktop replacement laptop?

replacing an i5 4210u acer, too fragile for constant commuting. i had to pry the case apart and remove the motherboard to upgrade the ram and hhd to ssd. NEVER AGAIN. 3 hour job.

5. How much battery life do you need?

4 hours non-gaming should be fine. i'll charge it between classes if need be, whatever. i do spring for the upgraded batteries when available.

6. Do you want to play games with your laptop? If so then please list the games that you want to with the settings that you want for these games. (Low,Medium or High)?

yes for gaming! However, i do NOT care about quality of visuals. I'm totally OK with running on low if it means i can get 45+ fps. frame rate is important to me. Witcher 3, guild wars 2... whatever else that comes out that might be fun. I play mostly indie stuff lately though that isnt really graphic intense. but i will get around to playing witcher 3 expansion content, eventually and it will probably have to be on said laptop.

7. What other tasks do you want to do with your laptop? (Photo/Video editing, Etc.)

progaming and database work, my current cpu is sufficient for this, the upgrade is for gaming and durability pruposes really.

8. How much storage (Hard Drive capacity) do you need?

non-issue. i'll replace whatever get with an ssd, if i nee more i'll just swap them out. I'm not story a lot of data here.

9. If you are considering specific sites to buy from, please post their links.

alienware 13r2 i5, dell inspiron 7000 sieries (probably i5)

10. How long do you want to keep your laptop?

3 years, i don't expect playing 3 years of modern games on it though at max settings, i have a desktop for that

11. What kind of Optical drive do you need? DVD ROM/Writer,Bluray ROM/Writer,Etc ?

optic drive? this isn't 2006. no.

12. Please tell us about the brands that you prefer to buy from them and the brands that you don't like and explain the reasons.

dell or alienware, they have plenty of local certified technitians if its something i can't fix myself. also support is important to me just in case.

13. What country do you live in?

'Merica

14. Please tell us any additional information if needed.

I have realistic expectations here, i don't care about maxing out settings on a particular game. I would prefer something smaller, thats why i'm considering the alineware 13r2 i5 version for the lower res-display. one for improved frames so as not to overwork that 960m and two because...smaller laptops are just more convenient for me. Also, eyestrain is factor. I'll be commuting 1 hr and 40 mins each way to school, so i will be away from my desktop constantly. I dont need to play hardcore games for hours while i'm at school... I would just stay home for that. I'm nearly 30 at this point, i'm not terribly rough on my equipment, however it does need to be pretty sturdy and i've had good experience with dell/ alienware in that regard. My wife's 5 year old inspiron is retired to terraria-server duty. still working.

I'm considering the inspiron 7000 because it seems to pack a lot of performance for the dollar

Service plans between the two machines are quite different. I can get a 3 years on the inpiron and still be under a grand. on the alienware i would be restricted to the 1 year plan it comes with as for some reason, the service plans on those are staggeringly expensive. Why i can't say, i would think with better cooling there would be less wear on the machine.

YES i know that the 13r2 has a dual core hyperthreaded cpu, will that really matter though? I'm pretty darn sure the 960m isn't enough to throttle it. the inspiron is a quad-core. both have a 960m and ddr3l memory. both upgradable to 16gb if i'm not mistaken. Yes, i would just upgrade the ram myself.
