Hello Guys,
i am planning to get a new laptop soon, my dad is willing to pay 700 USD, but i will be adding 300 USD from my own money to squeeze a little more out for a good laptop.
Before I get to the specs I'm looking for, i will say a few more things.
Firstly, this laptop is for chrismas/b-day, and i'm anticipating it, i would like to get it as quick as possible, but i am willing to wait until early January (2011),for a major price drop on a highly recommended notebook. Like HPs Redtage sale, it is a sale were they get rid of overstocked items for a cheaper price.
Also, i live near Dallas TX, in a nearby city there is a FRY'S megastore of some kind, i have never been to it, but if some one points out a great deal that i can get at frys, that would be helpful, because my dad isn't very fond of ordering online with a credit card.
i plan on keeping this laptop for more than 4 years, i dont want a outstanding warranty if its going to cost me extra bucks.
i am planning on using this laptop for school work (not college) and gaming, and a bunch of other things: burning cds/dvds watching movies, listening to music, and doing a bunch of video/photo editing.
i want the best i can get for $1k.
Now here are the specs and details i am looking for:

Brand: Any
CPU: Core i5 520+, all the way up to Intel Core i7 720qm.
HDD: 250 GB+ : i don't want to be picky, because i will probably be adding another 600 GB aslong as theres a second bay, SSD would be nice, but is 100% optional, i dont need one at all.
RAM: 4 GB + DDR3
OS: windows prefered.
SCREEN: 15.6 + (17 or bigger is better).
resolution: the higher the better.
Optical: DVD and CD writter, slot loading is awesome but is not important, blu-ray is ok, but i won't be very enthusiastic about it unless i have a 1080p display.
GPU: i need a good graphics card ATI: 5000 series or a current nVidia card, i don't really care about the brand of GPU, but as long as they're good then i'm fine.
Wireless internet is very important,
SD card is also important.
3 usb ports is minumum, eSata counts as a USB port. i don't care if its heavy, and i don't care about a battery.
and one last thing about the laptop, it needs to have a good review. i don't want to get a laptop that i have to replace 10 times before i find one that actually works.
im looking at 2 different laptops right now: the HP ENVY 17 1010NR or 1011NR, both are great, but both exceed my range, so i hope that if i end up waiting HP might have too many instore :)
and i've also been looking at a deal at FRYS that i have seen online: HP DV6 2190US.
as i have said before, my dad is getting the laptop with 700+300=1000 and he isn't optimistic about ordering online, but if there is a great deal, at a well known retailer online, that i might not see at the shops themselves, then i will conside it.
i hope this covers everything, if this isn't enough. i will be glad to provide additional details. i will be checking this forum until i get the laptop, and i plan on posting about my choice online, for people who are thinking about one like me, or so people could say if they think i made a smart choice.
Thanks in advance!

And just for fun, I got those Vaio stats for $1000 laptop:

Why not go with this Lenovo Thinkpad X201 Laptop: Core i7-620M 2.66 GHz, 4GB DDR3, 500GB HDD, WiFi N, 6-Cell Battery, Win 7 Prem, 12.1" just for $877.00. Nice specs for sure. It might worth u a peek.

Anyway, hope u find the best bet.

That laptop is Ok, but it cut me off with the Intel HD Graphics.
Intel hd graphics aren't that bad at all, but they can never compare to the power of a dedicated graphicsc card.
but i will keep the model on my list to check, if i ever do see it..

thanks! i will be checking those, i am planning on putting together a huge list before i get the laptop, and i will be comparing these too.
all 4 of the laptops are basically what i'm looking for, but the Dell XPS 14/15 aren't going to cut it this time, if they were a bit bigger than maybe, i might look at the XPS 17 though...

$1000 limit is quite tight for a gaming spec laptop. The big issue is what kind of GPU will you get at that price.

i know its tight, but its all i can afford to spend, its all that my dad is willing to spend, and the extra 300 is all i have.
i am also very unpatience sometimes, but i keep believing that because of the HP Envy new 3d version, and the new intel Core architecture, along with the new AMD Radeons 6000 Series GPU will help lower the prices.
i am not a sucker for 100% new technology, but i dont want something that was "new" 10 years ago.
so if the HP Redtage sale would drop its price 20-30% i would be very happy, but i have to be very realistic, because i know that all mnf are only after your money, and don't care if your satisfied with the laptop. if you aren't they stuff a replacement in your mouth so you won't cry.
it makes me sad to see this, i understand their business techniques and i don't like them, they are always trying to price things as high as they can without anyone being discouraged enough to not buy them.
i just hope that hp won't scam anyone with this redtag deal. and i also hope that i can find a alternative.
thanks guys for your answers, i am anticipating more please.
thank you.
