Actually they surgical masks are to protect against the inhalation of smog which has been proven to cause health problems especially for the elderly and the young whom you are most likely to see wearing the masks. That we Americans do not also wear such protections is a testament to the style over function society we've built, I suppose if Gucci and Louie Vutton start making surgical masks Americans might be able to shed their preconceptions and take a little bit better care of their health.
