If it was sony saying they made a new psp with the specs of the ps3, then I might believe it. It would still be false, but they would bend the truth by downgrading the cell processor in the ps3, saying it can never reach it's potential with current the software interface.

If Nintendo has access to the type of technology that would allow performance from a package that small, then why aren't Sony and Microsoft developing similar devices and why don't these developers have names?

I would absolutely love to have a netbook that could outperform my octacore configuration, sounds lovely for a couple hundred bucks with 0 heat issues. Unfortunately, this sounds more like hype and mythology than anything I've ever heard of. There are limited processor manufacturers in this world, I'm pretty sure if one had a platform that could calculate like a PS3 and fit in your hand they would have announced it and shocked the world.

I can't say it won't happen, but I remain highly skeptical. It's funny they compare it to a PS3 and say it needs to be like an iPhone...the best of all worlds?

Seems doubtful.

If Nintendo wants to regain control of the handheld market here in the States, the new device will need the hardware and supporting software (games, apps) to rival Apple and its new iPhone 4.

I'm pretty sure that Nintendo is still the leader in mobile gaming. The iPhone may overlap with the DS a little, but having tried dozens, if not hundreds of games on my iPhone, they all suck.

They could be saying the truth, but partialy due to a commom mistake: it may render lots and lots of triangles on screen, but the screen itself has a fraction of the pixels a big full HD TV has. Damn, such a TV has a 2 megapixel screen, that consoles update 60 times a second! Suposing the 3DS has the same resolution that the iPhone 4 has (unlikely) on each screen, that's 0.3 megapixels. Make it twice for 3D, and you're a little above half megapixel. That's a quarter of the power of consoles launched four years ago, so yes, it could be true.

I guess the biggest reason this might be possable is cause the PS3 is so old. Tech has come a long way since then and the new nintendo isn't out yet, so it might be something that'll be making the news a lot more later on in the year.

Maybe it'll appear similar in quality to the PS3/360 on 2 HVGA screens, but wait till you blow that up to 720p. Yuck! It would be muddy, jagged, and gross.

Something like this. Could it not be similar to the way consoles do it? Lots of games render in low quality, then upscale and gussy it up. Do you really think the 3DS screen is going to be that big? It could be rendering it in 320x280 or somesuch, which would be easy as pie, then upscale, top with some AA, and good to go.

Plus, considering the insane amounts of revenue that Nintendo has made off of the Wii, I'm sure they've been able to fund some decent R&D. As powerful as the PS3/Xbox 360? Overall, yeah, probably not. However, could you maybe get similar graphics? I think it seems possible.

People seem to forget this thing will be rendering a t a quarter of the resolution of the larger consoles. given how outdated the xbox 360 is now anyway, it really would not surprise me for the visuals of the 3DS to be comparable.

I just hope we see plenty of GC ports, that console had the best library of games ever. i would love to relive it on a handheld.

Explain to me why EVERY stupid arse tech site says that ANY iphone is a gaming machine?!?!?! WTF IT'S a PHONE you MORONS!!! Just because your phone can play games does NOT make it a portable gaming unit. It lacks buttons and that is what is needed to be a true gaming machine. Plus parents, lets see some hands (other then rich stuck up parents) on who would spend 400+ for a phone that plays games for there kid, over a 130 dollar handheld system??? I for one gave my kids a free phone and a DS/PSP, it's cheaper and I don't have to shell out tons of cash eash month for data.

Stop comparing the fcukn iphone to everything out there!!! It's just a fancy phone not a replacement for everything!

They're probably just implying that it can do v3 shaders, which the 3GS can do as well.

So they can likely do normal mapping, HDR, post-processing effects, etc., which, even with low poly models, would look 360/PS3-like on a tiny screen and low resolution.

This scares me because either it will mean a $400 handheld and/or zero battery life.

It might have the ability to do similar functions at a smaller resolution that will still look good on a small screen.
