no microphones work

hello, for the past year or so no microphone or headset or anything has worked on my computer, the headphones work fine, but i cant talk to people at all, and all these people tell me to do all these microphone tests but none of them work, ive tried uninstalling, ive tried updating ive tried getting new microphones, ive tried every single test there is, but not a single microphone works, not even the one built into my computer, can someone please help? Im at a loss here.

It sounds like your jack is an output only jack. Which is why the headphones work, but no microphones do.

It is really common for newer laptops to have [strike]the since output[/strike] a single "combo" jack.

There are two ways you can work around this. 1. To keep using any mic you already have, you will need an adapter that can allow for plugging your mic into it and then it would be USB on the other end. or 2. Get a headset and/or headset/mic combo that has a USB connection (rather than a 3.5 mm).

Buy a headset which has a single "combo" jack so it matches the combo jack on your laptop.
