I've been working on my dad's old laptop for a while. It's an HP Pavilion dv7. The other day I had it open and was trying to get an external monitor to work on it, and then all of a sudden boom, it was off. I thought it was the internal power supply, but I bought a new one and no dice. Not even the little led on the internal power supply comes on. I've tries different ports, everything. The only thing I can think of that I haven't tried yet is a different cord, but frankly I doubt that would help because it was just sitting there when it broke, the cord wasn't under stress or anything. Any ideas?

UPDATE: I checked the cord. It works just fine, so it must be something else.

UPDATE 2: If by the port you mean the internal psu, I already checked and replaced that. The laptop has one system board, but I'll check the 5-pin molex on that to see if it's loose. Thanks for the quick response though!

two things check the port on the laptop. it could have broken off the system board from age. if it was failing is starts to wiggle. the other is the power board or system board failed or fuse failed from age. if your dad lucky the laptop has a small power board that cheap and easy to fix. if it one system board in the laptop then it could be a costly repair. with some older laptop check for class action and recalls on them. some had heat/power/video card issues.
