no sound from dell to my vizio

hooked vizio tv up as extended screen to my dell inspiron 23 5348 via hdmi. set as default and no sound but toggle back to pc and sound is fine. tried vizio tv through my laptop and sound through hdmi was fine tried to get an updated dell driver and nothing changed.

The sound on the TV is it set up to just come through the tv, or is there anything else attached (like speakers, surround sound, etc.?)

Hmm, then it should work. Unless you are doing this in Windows 10. For some reason it has problems.
Be sure you are trying it by turning off the laptop (off not sleep or hibernate) and connecting the TV then turning on the laptop.
