Hello,

I'm trying to fix a friends laptop. When the Laptop is powered on everything spins up, the optical disk drive can be opened and closed, all the LED's work such as HDD power light and the charge light. When I turn the laptop off and run my hand against the back of the case, I can feel the heat which I'm assuming must mean there is some life.

What I have tried:

Connecting an external monitor: No signal thus far.
checking the RAM: Both sticks seem to be fine, or atleast there is no change when removing/ swapping their slots.
Clearing any static charge: I took out the battery, held the power button down for one minute and then placed the battery back in and the charger. No luck, same result.
Back light test: I shon a torch (it was a dim torch in honesty) but there was no image to be seen.

What else should I check?

Edit: The laptop is an Acer Aspire 5532

I tried this, however I didn't re-name the .fd file as the readme text didn't tell me I needed too. I held down Fn and esc and the fans spun up very loudly and remained doing so, however there was no image on the screen. I turned the PC off. The PC then wouldn't turn on at all, so I held the power button down with the battery out, and then plugged the power and battery back in, and it booted fine (still no video though). Can I assume I either messed up, or it's not the bios? I'm pretty sure I was meant to see video after a few seconds of holding (going on other people's video's).

I'm starting to think that the graphics card or motherboard is at fault. If I were to want to replace the graphics card, would I have to buy a whole new motherboard?

Me being me would pull the machine apart and try to see if their is sings of damage. .
Question? ....Did you clean out the exhaust fan at all? Excessive overheating can cause damage.
If the integrated graphics have gone then only a new motherboard would solve the issue.
