Well you may want to first try getting a new SIM from the carrier/service provider and see if the SIM you have is the issue. Not all SIMs work for all devices. However a SIM is for service, and usually inserted while the device is off. While SD cards can usually be inserted while the device is on.

If getting a new SIM from the carrier/service provider doesn't resolve it, then there may be a problem with that port on the phone.
Are you getting some kind of message when you insert them in the device? SD cards and SIM cards are two different things though. So each would react differently. What is occurring exactly?
