Novatel Sues Over MiFi Patents

just force patents to be narrow and direct about the item, that way competitors may be able to pick up on the technology and then that tech could be used to develop new tech, forcing all companies to continue researching and driving technology forward, rather than fat executives counting their money while they prevent any new innovation

That phrase certainly rhymes but haven't you got that phrase mixed up. If you didn't innovate and put in a patent then how can you sue?

I'm going to patent the patent system! Everyone who tries to patent stuff will be sued by me unless they pay me a handsome amount of money for the rights to patent!
 
This isnt that cut and dry. They do make a product so they are innovating. Their products are available widely and from the major carriers so they are not a patenet troll.

While their patent may be broad enough to cover wifi, they arent using or asserting it in that way so their is no story there and news outlets are just trying to be sensational.
