now i really screwed up

I formated my secondary hdd. that was not good at all. I tried unformat in dos but didn't get anything back.
Now i know that there is some companys that can retrieve overwritten and lost data from hdd's, what i wonder is if there's any way of doing this mysef, like some downloadable software?
I really haven't the money to get professional help but i also really, really want that data back...
if anyone know anything, please help

Professionals charge in the 5 digits to retrieve your data. I don't know of any programs, but I vaguely recall a thread about this a few months ago. You might want to search for it and see if you can turn anything up. I think a couple of programs were mentioned there.

well, I did a search on "lost data" and "retrieve" and came up with som fun (and wrong) stuff but nothing helpful. Thing is I saw a newsspot on a norwegian company that did data retrieval and it seemed that some of the stuff they did was non-intrusive, i.e. that they hooked up the hdd to their own rig and could somehow get data that was overwritten up to eight(!) times, if i remember correct.
Now that rig of their own may of course have been some weird ass of a hd-controller and not exchangable with software at all.
tell you what, i'll just go search the web for a couple of hours. see if i can get som info on their method. I have more or less given up hope on _my_ 20M of data, which is somewhat traumatic, so I need som terapheutic work to do anyway...

There was a thread regarding your probs in the HDD section a couple of weeks ago. Have a look in there. Try looking under unformat/unerase/disk recovery.

I have looked around a bit, followed up on posts here.
There is this software <A HREF="http/www.ontrack.co.uk/easyrecovery/" target="_new"> easy recovery personal 5.1</A> that may work, but since i did a <i>format d: /u</i> and tried <i>unformat</i> afterwards unsucessfully, I have small hope, therefor I have emailed them and described the problem more closely. And £ 119.00 is quite much to spend for me. :frown:
Mailed that guy with the freeware too.
Thing is; this rig runs linux and online, the one with the formatted hdd runs win 3.11 and is not. Both these progz seem a little big for floppys and I have no cd-r. So I will probably install a win 98 or something on this rig, connect the formatted hdd to this and try to fix it that way. Which make this a semi-long term project, since I have to locate a friend of mine who may 'borrow' me win98.
I suppose I should have made backups and all, but there was a little too much data for floppys and that was all I got, at the time.

Theres a program called lost & found from powerquest that is quite decent, they stopped making it now, but it is still available in pcworld (I presume you are from uk with the ££ in your other post) its about £30. Ontrack datarecovery is very good, costs a fortune tho.
