Obama can blame Bush, seeing as most of these companies capitulated and the Patriot Act was enacted during the Bush era and Obama wasn't in office yet, not to mention that most of this stuff is an NSA wet dream and hardly front line Presidential Order stuff

Ive read many articles on this but I think everyone has it all wrong. This article makes it seem like the NSA has a backdoor into these companies servers... while this may be true to an extent (more so with Facebook) I just dont think that is how they are getting info.
A more likely scenario to me is that all requests going through your ISP are proxied through government servers that capture ALL data, requests and responses. This data gets saved into a database where it is later processed automatically and then flagged for human review. This being the case no form of SSL or TLS encryption really secures your data as the encryption keys are exchanged through thr same servers allowing the government to capture unencrypted data.
What can be done? Stop using these services first of all as the government definitly has hooks into their traffic. Second get a VPN and use it. Preferably comect to servers in other countries to make the traffic hard to trace.

@koga73 - having the endpoint to an SSL cert includes authentically believing you are communicating with https://www.facebook.com or whatever the case may be. If the NSA has this endpoint, I would not just call it a backdoor, but outright fraud (even the frontdoor). Now if it being truly proxied, then they would need some serious computing power to clear all the SSL they capture. This would be far more expensive than working this agreement with these companies and just getting the data.

@hoofhearted possibly could be why certain sites are listed. they could drastically save on computing power and database storage by only targeting traffic for specific sites such as those listed in the article rather than all traffic.
