I have a new smart TV and the audio output is optical I assume female. I Have a very nice speaker system from an old computer would like to hook to the TV for better sound. I was told to get an optical to 3.5 female adapter but I don't seem to find one and don't know if this would work. I know there is a genius somewhere that can set me straight.

Solution
What TV? There is optical and digital output and people confuse the two all the time, so with the TV model # I can see exactly what it has and recommend something instead of guessing if you meant one instead of the other.

I have gone to where I bought the TV a Panasonic they suggested I needed an optics to 3.5 female adapter to hook up my old speakers to the "audio digital output" covered with a rubber trap so I assume as they said it is optical.

That doesn't convert anything. It only changes the size.

Gotta love robot chicken!
Thanks dude so is not that simple huh?
Well I guess won't be able to use my primo computer speakers it would be cheaper to get me a sound bar.
