PBM: HP Pavilion ze4600 runs at much slower rate than init..

Hi.

A friend of mine bought a HP Pavilion ze4600 laptop. She said it used to be
fast; now it's slower than ever. She told me she used to leave her laptop on
with the power supply instead of running it with the battery. After one year
she changed the battery and now she manages to run on battery whenever
possible.

I've looked at Windows System properties and I saw CPU runs at about 510 MHz
instead of 1.8 GHz (or alike). I've found nothing in the BIOS that would
allow me to set the nominal rate. I didn't find any utility on the laptop
either. Does anyone know if it's possible to restore the CPU frequency to
its nominal value? Has there been an overheating problem?

The speed stepping is normal. The computer needs to be cleaned up and

Do you mean speed stepping occurs *because* the disk is not defragged? or is
speed stepping due to overheating, working on batteries or whatever else?

She did defrag the disk but didn't notice any change. I've seen speed
downstepping occur mainly when working on batteries or when the CPU was busy
too long. I never saw such a huge step indeed.

As for spyware she did run Ad-Aware (which found no critical programs, just
cookies as usual), she has a firewall (Windows XP's) and an anti-virus since
she bought the computer.

Hey Vince or Q,

do either of you know how many prong connector I would need to hook up my friend's ze 4600 hard drive to a regular pc as the slave or external so I can find out what is wrong with the hard drive... It continually displays the wonderful "blue screen of death" at start up and also says that I need to run a "self startup test" if you have seen or heard of anything of this nature pls let me know. and in respose to the over heating her laptop has been over heating quite excessively
