Photoshop/gimp quiston are they alike

I have the opertunity to get a giftcode for photoshop. i use gimp alought. are they alike in some ways

In that they both edit photos, yes.

They can do MUCH more than just edit photos. At their lowest common denominator they are quite alike. Although Photoshop can work with 16-bits per channel (48-bit) whereas at present The GIMP is limited to 8-bits per channel (24-bit), though 16-bit support is in the pipeline. The GIMP does have a few major advantages over Photoshop in that is is multi-platform (Windows, Mac, Linux), opensource, and free.

The fact that gimp is free is it's greatest achievement. I use it and there seems to be a way to do everything that Photoshop can do in gimp. But if you could get Photoshop for free using a giftcode, don't waste the opportunity. Photoshop appears to be the leader in graphics and design, and their interface is a bit cleaner than gimp's. They are pretty much identical in capability.
