Pitfall advice needed

I've been playing Pitfall lately, and I have a few questions:

1) I never seem to find any gold in the lower catacomb. I run past
screen after screen jumping over scorpions only to get to a brick wall
and have to go back again. Is there EVER anything good in the lower
level?

2) I have noticed that the top screens "seem" to change when you are in
the lower level, ie: you will see things up there when you are down
there, but then when you go back up, the screens will be different -
does that make sense? Why is this?

3) Are there any differences in the Intellivision version of Pitfall? I
know it looks and sounds exactly the same, but are there also the same
screen sequences? Are there any differences at all?

4) If there is any treasure to be found below, is there a way to know
which ladder to climb down (specific screen, etc), or is it just hit
and miss?

Any other observations you have about this fascinating game please also
share.

Thanks!

The lower level is a shortcut--no treasures ever appear there. IIRC, when
you take the lower passage, you skip three "screens" ahead. In other words,
if you run on the top level, you'll see screen 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9,
etc. If you run on the lower level, you'll see screen 1, 4, 7, etc.

See the last question. If you take the lower level, you skip three screens
ahead. That's why when you climb up at the end and double back on the upper
level, the next screen you'll see won't be the same one you just saw while
underground.

AFAIK, the map/layout is the same for all versions.

There is no treasure, but there is a way to know which ladder to
take--you'll need to refer to a Pitfall! map. I'm sure that you can find
one using a Google! search. Basically, look at a screen with a ladder to
the lower level, count three screens over on the map and see if it leads to
a clear passage, an exit ladder, or a brick wall.

Like I said, you'll be able to find a map as well as suggested routes
online. I was never able to get a perfect score--I always hit a log or
dropped down a hole somewhere, but I came close to getting all the treasures
once. The timer ran out when I had one treasure left to go. Traveling from
right to left seems to work best. Have fun!
