I once read that the human eye can only see 300 ppi. Smartphones and tablets have gone way beyond that, easily 400 or more. Today I even read a rumour the Galaxy S5 would be rocking a 560 ppi screen.

Why do they keep upping the ppi if people can't notice the difference? Or can people see the difference? I don't know, I'm curious.

The human eye may not notice DPI but an overall picture quality with colors and clarity is what they are trying to improve. It's similar to the newer monitors are now going to be 4K instead of 1920x1080p. Instead of HD it's now ultra HD.
