pls help me

I accidently hit my side on the table earlier and my phone hit the table and it turned off and I keep pressing the power button but it wont work so I plug in the charger and nothing happens so I keep it plugged in and I take the battery out and phone turns on cus its connected to the charger and it has a pic of a empty battery and a sign w/a question mark nd when I try to put the battery in while its on it turns off what do I do!!

I feel like the hit to the phone didn't cause it to go dead. Is it possible the battery was low? If, I would just let it charge for awhile.
