I have a mobo that is capable of unlocking cores. Is it possible to unlock Athlon cores or is that only a Phenom thing?

Solution
The motherboard is what unlocks the cores, and it'll go away as soon as your change settings in the BIOS.

Athlon II X2 can't unlock cores, it's a native dual core, and has more L2 cache per core than any other AMD processor currently.
Single-core Sempys can unlock into dual-core AthlonIIs.

Some triple-core Rana chips can unlock to Propus quad-cores.

From time-to-time you may find a chip which will unlock L3 cache.

Some early Propus quads would unlock into PhenomIIs .....

So it is possible to unlock athlon ii x2's and x3's ?

I don't know much about Athlons as Phenoms are my only choice.I thought it was just exclusive to them because they are BE.But i guess BE is just an unlocked multiplier.

Another question...
If you do manage to unlock extra cores is it permeant within the chip or is only accesiable thru the motherboard you used to unlock it?

Depends on the athlon in question. x3 ya, x2 no (but some weird oems yes, and the short lived x2 5000 or 5200 i forget its exact number, it too is unlockable, but that's it. x2s for the most part are not unlockable at all.

what Athlon do you have? Even if you have the one which usually unlocks cores you might have problems with it later or it just won't unlock it
