Powering a laptop with a desktop

Hi,

I'm looking to replace my gaming laptop with a desktop, but I don't want to lose the convenience of having a laptop I can stow away after sitting on the couch.

So I was thinking. I'd like to build my own gaming desktop, and connect it to a barebone laptop case through HDMI IN. The laptop would basically be a monitor and keyboard + mouse. This way I could easily upgrade hardware without having to fork out for a new laptop.

Because this is a gaming rig, it is important there won't be input lag.

Any suggestions as to how to do this, or similar solutions?

Thanks in advance. :)

Why would you want to run a gaming desktop thru a barebones laptop? The screen is tiny and it would be a waste of good hardware. You wouldnt have any portability by running a desktop thru a laptop.

Portability is not important as it will only be used at home.

The screen would ideally be around 17" and have 1920x1200 resolution, like my current laptop.

Won't let me edit the post, for some reason.

I'd like to add that my main reasons for wanting this setup is flexibility in upgrading hardware, convenience of being able to sit on the couch and hide the computer when done, and avoiding the pricetag of buying a high-end gaming laptop.
