Pre out for Amp

Hi I have a Yamaha rx v579 receiver which has 2 pre out outputs.. As it is a 7.2 receiver my guess is that's for my 2 subwoofer. If I buy a separate power amp, would I be able to connect it to this receiver? Can I use the same pre out port or I need something else?

The 2 Sub pre-outs can be connected to a separate amp to power passive subs.

However, most subs are already powered so there wouldn't be a need to have a separate amp. You'd simply connect the pre-out on the AVR to the Line-In on the sub.
