Product key missing

What does one do if all they want to do to a machine is refresh but upon reinstalling Windows, (in this case Windows 10) the product key does not get inserted and the installation program asks you for a product key you don't have, because there is no documentation with that information, much less a sticker underneath the laptop computer and since the OS is is new, running a system report like Belarc is out of the question, too late?

Did the PC come with Win 10, or was it an upgrade? If an upgrade, from 7 or 8.1?

Try just hitting Skip each time it asks you - if it's already had 10 installed and activated before, it will activate once it's booted up and connected to the net.

It is not an update and is Windows 10. I entered in a duplicate Product key from one of the other machines just to finish the installation,however neither Microsoft or HP has a way of giving me a product key, even after having provided them with the machine's serial number, model number, date of purchase etc. One tech said my only option was to send for the recovery discs but that is $45.00. Looking for another way out??????
