They are saying that it is related to a date bug that only affects older units, and not the slim. So this is not going to be fixed by a software update. Most likely it is a firmware issue, much like the bios on a pc, which is the culprit. They probably cannot fix this remotely.

Probably what happens is when the PS3 trys to since with the PSN the dates don't match and it causes it to try and sync the date to the correct date but it can't and errors out and resets itself back to the default earliest date of 2000.

I'm guessing it is a leapyear bug because it happened at the end of February and they are telling everyone to wait 48 hours until March 2nd to try it again. Probably won't even try to release a fix for it. I just think that if they really knew what caused it and thought they could actually fix it they would say they could do so in a time frame quicker than 48 hours considering every PS3 in the world is broken save for the slim which cannot possibly make up more than 15% of the customer base at this point.

***********this is why i don't buy consoles anymore... too much failure... remember n64? sega dreamcast? I had no issues with either. got an xbox... fried itself (e\/en though i kept it clean and the fan worked fine) and then hearing about rrod and wii firmware that bricks itself, and ps3 failures and all three riddled with drm. I'll stick to my pc games, where at least i can ha\/e a work around.**********

I'm Sorry Dude but Consoles are far much more reliable and far less virus problematic than Pc's are. There are more Viruses spread and more Pc Crashes in a single day than there are in a Month with
Consoles, your remarks are retarted. Secondly a blogger says he's Sorry he bought a PS3 instead of
a Xbox360 because he wanted to watch " The Dark Knight " in Bluray. Well Sir you did the correct
thing, while the PS3 might have some small issues from time to time they are far more reliable than
any Crashbox360 and they make half the noise. There return rate is 1/20 of that of the Crashbox360 and because they produce much less heat they also last longer than a Crashbox360.

hakesterman, you're an idiot. The only reason a PC would crash from a virus is due to user incompetence, such as surfing on shady porn websites, or downloading infected stuff off limewire. Learn to use a computer before you whine about them, please.

Although I would agree that the 360 is very unreliable, compared to the PS3 and Wii.

[citation][nom]dman3k[/nom]I seriously bought a PS3 to watch The Dark Knight...[/citation]

Seriously? Were you not aware you can buy a standalone BD player for under $150 or a SATA BD-ROM for your PC for well under $100?

That is one expensive movie you watched there, bub.

I have two PS3 units, both fat. The big difference between the one that is not working and the one that works is that the one that is not working does backwards compatibility. My guess is that the DRM adds through the PSN firmware took effect on 3/1/10 00:00HRS GMT (that's 4PM 2/28/10 my time). If this is actually a DRM issue (and since all my PSN downloaded PS1 games all say that I don't own them, I would believe so), then only people with backward compatible machines, whether that be the hardware emulation or software emulation versions, would be affected by this so-called bug. Just calling out all fat PS3 users or all PS3 users in general while they get this corrected is their way of not causing any more panic or "Big Brother" conspiracies than they already have...

Yeah, but you are at the mercy of the company to help you- which usually costs money, and shipping.

Assuming that I would get the cheapest xbox 360 (arcade), $199 xbox + $150 for the cheapest blu-ray player at the time is more than the deal I got from Deal that sold the PS3 for $299 with 2 controllers, Killzone 2, and a ps3 remote.

But the problem with the PS3 is that I do rather spend $50 more on a gaming console that actually does games... PS3's game selection sucks. I need multiplayer, and there's nobody I know with a PS3 that I could play online with!

Ah, well that makes better sense. The way you worded it earlier it sounded like you really only bought a PS3 for a single BD movie. And why do you need one of your friends in real life to play with? I've met countless interesting folks gaming online with the PS3. I will say having three other friends with one and having the same games is fun, but branch out man! I spend more time gaming online with strangers than with my real world friends (and that goes for PC gaming too).

And had you commented that the PS3 gaming selection sucked back in 2007 when I bought mine, I'd agree with you. But I don't see how anyone can say the PS3 game selection of today sucks. Not as good as the XBOX of course, but there are some fantastic games out there. The last one I bought, Uncharted 2 (proprietary to PS3), won Game Of The Year accolades from gaming sites, and I love it. You've got the console dude, now get out and enjoy it! And thank yourself you bought one now because they are hard to find at the moment.

haha... the first time my brother has texted me in years and his only concern was "don't turn in the ps3 due to a virus".

That's what gamers want. Multiplayer co-op single player campaign. And you can't really play that over a long extended period of time with just some stranger.

Beside, no Left 4 Dead 2 is utter failure on Sony's part. It's only like the most popular game right now. Sony didn't do much to bring Left 4 Dead (orginal) to PSN cause they cannot predict that it would become the greatest multiplayer game last year, but they should have seen the stats and tried harder to bring the sequel to PSN. Pay Valve to develop for the PS3 engine!

reminds me of Y2K, imagine if this was not just the ps3's, but the computers that Sony would use to fix this bug, and on an on up th e chain.
