Question about buying a ribbon cable

if i buy a cable with more than the number of pins i need, can i cut the cable to only have the number of pins i need?

sure you can cut the cable but what are you going to then use to connect the cable to the device?

the laptop has connectors on it. i'm only replacing a bent up cable.
can somebody help me find a JI-HAW AWM E118077 2896 80C 30V VW-1 6 pin 8 1/2" long 1/8" wide?

thanks, but all of the cables on ebay are 1/4" and my cable is 1/8" inch... anybody able to help? i need the cable to be 8 1/2" by 1/8"

I was told a ribbon cable with more pins than I need can be cut down to the right number of pins, but how do I make sure the cable will be the right width? Some 6 pin cables are 1/4" wide and some are 1/8" wide, so how do I know how wide of a cable I need to buy with >6 pins so it will cut down to be 1/8" wide with 6 pins?

Well first off, you are not going to MAKE your own laptop cable, furgitaboutit, they are super-thin, super-small, they require special tool etc. Fortunately, there are outfits who sell used laptops part, they are on eBay, if you have the exact part number, chances are, you will find the exact replacement..... why jury-rig it?
