RAM problem computer runs very slowly

my five year old laptop shows that it is using 294 MB of ram on the user side but 74% of it but I have 2GB ram does this mean there is a virus or something in my PC

Nope, seems right for only 2GB of RAM, Windows take a bit of RAM to run what it needs to. If you think you have a virus, do you run an anti-virus program? Did you run a scan?
