RAM upgrade question

I recently bought http/www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834158024, it has an AMD v140 processor but only came with 2gbs of memory (I don't know the speed, I imagine it's not much) and I feel like an upgrade would be worth it.

Right now I'm looking at 4gb of ddr3 1600mhz, would my cpu be able to utilize RAM of that high speed? It already came with dd3 memory so I imagine that it would be compatible, but I want to make sure

I'm looking at http/www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231481, at $25 it seems like a great deal for a upgrade.

Your users manual should advise what the maximum RAM capacity is and what RAM speed is supported by the BIOS. It looks like the RAM you're looking at might work but each laptop mobo can be different.

buy 1333 Mhz RAM if its cheaper. Its likely that your laptop will not run DDR3 at 1600Mhz anyways. It will just downclock it to 1333 or 1066Mhz. But 4GB of RAM is a nice upgrade over 2GB.

What I would do before upgrading is take the coner off the ram bay and see what is in there for ram and try to match it. If you want to go higher speed then look up your cpu and see what the QVL says.

on compag came out with 2 gig.of memory and is says 2 dimm slots so check if all dimm are filed before you buy

Your laptop has a V140 CPU which has a 533Mhz memory controller. You can run RAM up to 1066Mhz. Buying anything over DDR3 1066Mhz would be wasted. It also only supports up to 2GB in each slot so you can only use up to 4GB. Also, the newegg link you posted claims the laptop came with a 5400rpm hdd. If you can acquire a 7200rpm drive then that might be worthwile as well. I found all this info from cpu-world.com's listing for your V140 CPU and hp.com's manual for your laptop.

I went ahead and popped the laptop open and found the company put a pair of ddr3 1333 1gbs. Considering the RAM top speed is 1066mhz I'm assuming the faster RAM must have just been cheaper for them?

That's possible. Or they had a huge surplus of DDR3 1333mhz modules. You could look in your BIOS or run CPU-Z and see what frequency your RAM's actually running just to be sure.

I checked it out, and yep it maxes out at 1066 - so now I'll get 2x 2gb 1066 and save 10 bucks in the process.

You're welcome, glad we could help. Also, check out your hdd and make sure it's not a 5400rpm hdd. If it is, see how cheap you could get a 7200rpm drive big enough for you as it would be a noticeable upgrade too I think. It alwyas has been in the past when I've upgrade the hdd to a 7200rpm drive.
