Question RCA to HDMI converter not working with DVD player

I have an 11 year old DVD recorder and an even older DVD player. My TV does not have RCA ports. I bought a RCA to HDMI converter. After I hooked it up, I got a not very good picture when playing a DVD disc. Then I lost the picture and got a "No Signal" message on the screen. This happened with both DVD devices.

Do you think I can make this work or should I buy a new DVD player?
