I purchased a cd with a cda format and want to copy it to my music collection on my hard drive as a MP3 but it is protected what to do

If you have a regular hifi CD player, you can play the disc and take either a digital or analog output (depends on CD player model and on your computer's sound facilities) and record it as a WAV or MP3.

The simplest way is to run an RCA to minijack cable from the audio outtputs of the CD player to the line-in socket on the computer's sound circuitry. Download Audacity and record each track of the CD separately and save it as a WAV or MP3.

Oddly enough copy protection on CDs doesn't always work -- so it's worth experimenting with your computer a little. I also found that purpose built CD Recorder decks ignore copy protection.
