Repairing disk error

Hi there, using a hp pavillion laptop and since starting the laptop up I have a message saying 'repairing disk error this make take over an hour to complete' I am unable to do anything else.

Any advice?

wait for it to finish?

Or buy a new disk and reinstall the OS?

for the same error? more likely the harddrive failed

Same. Have tried many fixes. Pavilion 8+ yrs old. Probably just need to replace. Thanks
