It's so they can broaden the appeal of the iPhone as far as price goes. Still, it's the AT&T contract that kills the deal in terms of money.

considering the plan ends up costing 80-90$ a month, the upgrade cost for the total cost of the plan and phone ends up being 5% more for the 16GB, and 10% more for the 32GB. Of course if you dont need the storage you don't need the storage so you might as well save the $100 or $200 upfront cost.

One of Apple's executives announce that they will dissolve the AT&T partnership and it will be available on multiple GSM carriers, simply because AT&T is making the phone's basic functions unusable at times.

oh yeah, censorship, closed platform, markup of over 50% for customers service that would sue you if you ever tell other people, equating a person life to the price of a macbook, making tons of anonymous donations to move the cult leader to the top of the organ donation list, and throwing people off the buildings.
