Is it possible to use my own music as a ringtone on my Iphone 3gs?
Is it default in the phone or do I need to jailbreak / use an app for it?

Yes, you can. don't need to jailbreak.
Just cut it into 30s via itunes on your desktop, then save and rename the file into .m4r.
