as soon as someone releases a media player that lets you access standared windows file shares I'm in. So far I've found that XBMC does it all and runs on the old Xbox, ATV hardware, not to mention PC and Apple platforms.

Congratulations!! I still prefer a media center PC, but that's just personal preference.

Off-topic: I still don't understand why Apple decided to call it "Apple TV" because it's not an actual TV, and in the article it really does read like it is a "TV".

there's a cheaper version that costs less then 10th of the price and that works really well. It just requires some assembly. It's called raspberry pi.

i have that its called a PS3. i have a program called PS3 media server installed on my PC and it will let me play all video and audio formats. plays HD 720p and 1080p

I have WD-Live, Roku 2 XS, XBMC and a Home Theater Media PC in the living room. Each serves their own purposes. WD-Live is my fav.

Though I've thought about getting Apple TV for all the Free Digital Downloads I have stored on iTunes, I'll just leave it on the PC instead of having more clutter.

I appreciate Roku, they make solid products that are far better than apple tv crap. If you don't want to spend the time to mod the crap outa the Apple TV box, than Roku is a nice choice. Personally I use Boxee, its free to download and put on any old hardware/os you have to stream local storage/network storage movies!!

WD TV Live does this. The perfect media player for pirated movies, but does ok job at streaming Netflix/Hulu etc too.

nice @whitelyric, I'll have to check it out, the old Xbox is nice an all (UI is really slick) but it can't cope with HD Content.

Personally, I like the Apple TV box. Inexpensive, reliable, streams great from my NAS. Easy to jailbreak and install XMBC on as well.

Plus it doesn't look like some kids toy, like the Roku does.

I'm very satisfy with my Micca EP600. It supports way more video formats than the best of Roku. If Roku is really here to compete, at least check out the competitors' spec.

I wanted a Boxee since it had everything I wanted and more but the price was too high for me so I settled for the Roku 2 XD, I was very pleased seeing how responsive it is with every program and it has subtitles on Netflix which is a huge plus for me. Also the size is very small, so it makes the Roku very portable, all it needs is a USB slot and support for the majority of codecs for it to be perfect.

Well then go buy a Roku box...because you can do just that.

I got an old mac mini running windows for about the same price, same form factor but has a dvd drive and you can swap the hard drive with any 2.5inch SATA.
