I'm wondering whether the price difference is very much "worth it" here. I can get a stronger card (970M) and free upgrades to 1C Diamond thermal compound and 30-day dead pixel warranty if I get the 8278-S. The price is about 190 higher. To upgrade the 8278 with the 970M is $200, and thermal compound is $35, so the 8278 would be $$1411ish if made comparable, and that's still without Blu-Ray, so the savings is about 60 bucks here.

So, is the 970M really worth it over the 870M for a gamer who mostly plays old-school RPGs (Kickstarters like Wasteland 2 and Divinity: Original Sin will be next for me) and good new open-world RPGs (Cyberpunk from CD Projekt Red, Fallout 4, next TES game, etc. will be next for me in this vein)? By the way, I will purchase a $100 Crucial 120GB SSD as an add-on either way.

Sager NP 8278-S with 970M - $1376.00 http://www.xoticpc.com/sager-np8278s-clevo-p170sma-p-6985.html?wconfigure=yes

Sager NP 8278 with 870M - $1180.00 http://www.xoticpc.com/sager-np8278-clevo-p170sma-eta-march-p-6984.html?wconfigure=yes

Thanks a TON for any thoughts. I used to work in IT, but I no longer do, and I don't have the time or inclination to track hardware year after year anymore. I hear great reviews of the 900M series, though.

The 970m should be about 30% more powerful than the 870m, it depends on you if 30% matters or not. It shouldn't really be an issue in these games you're planning in playing though, I guess depending on how much time you will be keeping your laptop matters too, the 970m should help 1 year more
