1. What is your budget?
$500 max. $400 would be even better.
2. What is the size of the notebook that you are considering?
15.6" would be my first choice.
3. What screen resolution do you want?
1366 x 768 is fine.
4. Do you need a portable or desktop replacement laptop?
A little of both. This will be used as the main word processor for a new student with only basic computer knowledge.
5. How much battery life do you need?
I would say 3-4 hours minimum.
6. Do you want to play games with your laptop? If so then please list the games that you want to
with the settings that you want for these games. (Low,Medium or High)?
No, not really. Probably facebook etc... only.
7. What other tasks do you want to do with your laptop? (Photo/Video editing, Etc.)
Word processing, email, internet surfing, watching dvds/netflix.
8. How much storage (Hard Drive capacity) do you need?
320gb min.
9. If you are considering specific sites to buy from, please post their links.
These two seem to be the top runners right now:

10. How long do you want to keep your laptop?
Probably as long as it works.
11. What kind of Optical drive do you need? DVD ROM/Writer,Bluray ROM/Writer,Etc ?
Dvd reader. CD/DVD burner is a nice plus.
12. Please tell us about the brands that you prefer to buy from them and the brands that you don't like and explain the reasons.
No particular preference, I have successfully used HP, Toshiba, Lenovo, Sony and others I'm forgetting, but I'm not a big laptop person.
13. What country do you live in?
USA
14. Please tell us any additional information if needed.
As stated, this will be the main computer for a new student and will have to serve all duties. I think it will mostly be kept at home but who knows. She might end up taking it to classes and so forth. Gaming isn't a priority, just something that is simple, cheap, pretty durable, etc. A good keyboard would be nice. Windows 7 is a must. Touch screen isn't important.
I tried to do some research but the budget market changes so fast most of the recommendations are unavailable. I like the specs of the Lenovo I linked more, but I have more faith in Toshiba products at this price point.
I would like for it to be purchasable at a big name retailer with easy returns and perhaps offer an extended warranty or something like that. If something goes wrong with the laptop I would like her to have some support.
Thank you for your help! The purchase date is probably next week.
