screen goes black

Hello I have a compaq laptop that was working until I restarted it and it died, now this isn't the typical black screen as I am able to start it up perfectly and even log in, before the black screen it does go a grey colour and you are able to move the mouse
but then black with nothing happening, it might occasionally go back to the Grey screen and the mouse appears but only for a couple seconds and then goes back to a black screen. Please help!

Sounds like the display is kaput and you need to replace it.
