SD card problem

I got a SD CARD for a canon power shot and it says the card is full, but I can't view any of the photos on my pc but 8 old ones....

Has the SD card ever been used in another camera? What is the storage capacity of the SD card (4 GB, 8 GB, more or less than the numbers mentioned)?
