A lot of artists in the US are FOR sharing, but won't say so to the media for obvious reasons. I don't even remember how many times I have heard at a show "i have a new record coming out; go buy it, download it, or however you have to get it just get it because that's why I'm here". What I remember noticing is that the number of times I have heard "don't share my record on limewire cause that would be stealing" is ZERO. Maybe I just tend to listen to/attend music performed by decent people, not media whores.

The problem with record sharing isn't with the artists... it's with the record industry and RIAA - why? because they are made up of lawyers... and we all know lawyers are spawns of hell.

That is, unless that particular lawyer is saving you from going to federal pound-me-in-the-ass prison...

Just for this I'm going to go out a buy one of her CDs. Dunno if I'll actually listen to it - maybe give it to a friend - but they say you're supposed to vote with your money, eh?

Until now I just thought she was a commercial product. I still don't like her music or singing but I now respect her because of her views.

I'm even more impressed by the fact that a serious musician like Nick Mason supports file sharing though. Having Pink Floyd support file sharing is massive.

While I'm not a fan of Shakira's music, I applaud her for this. What a lot of people don't know is that most artists don't make jack off record sales. Due to the slavery contracts that most record companies (who are represented by the RIAA hmmm...) make them sign. The only way they can really hope to make money is through touring and merchendise sales. If you've ever heard of Steve Albini, he wrote a really good essay on the record industry entitled The Problem With Music" [url="] Note that this contains quite a bit of profanity, so if you're easily offended, don't click this link.

I admire Shakira is a great dancer. I don't much care for what she sings, but I do like her voice.

She also helps show that there's more beauty in the world than just 18 year old bleach blondes with Ds...

[citation][nom]Article[/nom]Artist Lilly Allen recently took a stand against file-sharing, claiming it wasn't doing British music or new comers any good[/citation]
It's Lily Allen I believe. Anyway she's wrong. Take herself for example - I hadn't ever heard of her until I stumbled upon her on dc++ - then I went out and bought both her albums - that's money she'd never have gotten if I hadn't borrowed some of her tracks online first.

If you don't pay for the music, they don't get paid for their work.
This should rather say:
"If you don't pay for the music, the recording company does not get the money."
Musicians may make much more money by doing live performances than just wait for people to buy their CDs. You can't pirate the live experience unless you get there without buying a ticket (which is way harder than torrenting).
