I want to do my work, I am an architect and need to use multiple software at once. I game but they are pretty basic so doesn't require much from my system.
I was thinking of adding SSD by replacing my CD drive and move windows there and making my RAM 12 or 16 gb.

I would replace the main drive with the SSD and move the old one to the drive bay if you want for backups. You can clone the existing drive to the SSD (assuming you have enough space on the new drive) or just do a clean Windows setup on the new drive.

If you have a single 8 gb stick you can add a second one, it's not the best configuration to use mis-matched RAM size.
