Simply need email capability

I don't need the web, I don't need to take pictures, send or receive
pictures -- I simply need to check my email from time to time and
respond to 1 or 2 a day.
Is there a phone/service that allows me to do this without costing an
arm and a leg.
I don't mind a one-time cost for a phone or pda but don't particularly
want to pay $40 or $50 bucks a month to answer a few emails.
I travel and now have been hooking up the laptop each night in a hotel
room. But I would like to be more responsive to some of my emails.

Also I want to stay within the system -- nothing unethical -- whatever
that means.

In that case, a Treo 650 would be up your alley, if you're truly okay
with the one time cost. If you're a current customer that hasn't
upgraded in 18 months, the cost is $450. While it does do web and
pictures, it also does e-mail exceptionally well, and all for the same
price as a Vision pack on a regular phone (typically $15/month on top of
whatever voice plan you have).

Another option is the Blackberry device that Sprint has through Business
channels, but it costs $50 more:

You can also go the cheap route: forwarding your e-mail to your
sprintpcs.com address, and using any Vision enabled phone to check ad
reply to your sprintpcs e-mail. I've tried this though, and even for a
couple of e-mails a day, I've found this approach to be very awkward at
best.

A standard Vision phone and emailviewer might work too. John Navas posted here
about it, I downloaded it and I think it's a genuinely good program. As far as
I know the free trial doesn't expire, but it only lets you access your Inbox a
few times every day. $20 to register it or $5 or $6 per month for a
subscription (not sure what the subscription gets you, you'll have to contact
the vendor)

The best thing about it: Getting on the Web to check email means your voice
calls go to voicemail -- until Sprint deploys 1xEV-DV, which won't be for at
least another year or so. emailviewer is a Java application, so if there is an
incoming call it can interrupt the app.

I haven't bought it yet, but plan to when I have the money. It works really
well with my IMAP server and is advertised to work with POP3 mail servers too.

Thanks for the information. I don't know where I got the number 49.95
to add this feature to my existing sprintpcs plan.
I got on to their site and it mentions unlimited access to AOL and
Yahoo email. My email is a POP3 via earthlink.
Is this going to be a problem?

Short answer: with a pda/phone, no it won't be a problem.

Long answer:
Access to Yahoo and AOL e-mail is through the Vision browser, which has
quicklinks that allow you to sign into AOL and Yahoo's respective mobile
phone portals. If you use a phone/PDA device like a Palm, PocketPC or
Blackberry device, then you won't be using that same browser to get into
your e-mail. Instead you'll be using a mobile e-mail client that can
connect to any POP3 account, including earthlink.

Hi Bob,

How did you request yours? I saw that there was going to be a way to do
to so posted on Palm's website some time in early December, but if you
already did it, I'd love to know how.

Got a Treo 650 myself, and while I'm largely satisfied, it is starting
to fill up.

I noticed from one of your other posts - which I need to reply also --
that you have a Treo 650.
It seems like that is probably what I will go for.
I sell software over the internet which requires the buyer to e-mail
us an ID from which I supply a Registration Code which I return via
e-mail. I handle the e-mail with the signature option. I have a
number of signatures set up for different circumstances. They act as
a form. I apply the signature -- fill in a name and a code and sent
it out.
Is the mobile e-mail client on the 650 sophisticated enough to do
this. I suppose I could set up a draft folder and work with draft
e-mails. Does that also sound like a plan?
The only other question I have and it probably should be addressed in
a palm-oriented group -- but here goes anyway. The code generator is
a simple C program that executes out of the Window's Command Prompt.
How hard would it be to install that on the 650. With a little effort
I could put in into Java.

Isaiah -- if you are reading this I'm sorry for calling you Brian in
the post upstream.

Isaiah ask how you applied for the card. I am interested in this also
but I would like to know if they plan on "fixing" -- if that is the
right word -- the file system and how they plan on upgrading the
existing phones. Do you have any information on that. Do you suppose
it will be a trade in, take it to the service store, or something
else?

Palm did announce that they are working on a fix of sorts that does a
better job of optimizing memory usage. It might not completely
eliminate the problem, but it will likely improve things to a more
acceptable level.

Most likely it will be a firmware update. Like other firmware revisions
on previous models, you would download an installer, hook up your Treo
and load the new firmware into it using your computer.

I don't think it is. I don't work with multiple signatures, so I can't
be 100% sure, but I haven't seen this functionality in either VersaMail
or in Sprint's Business Connection software.

That would probably work better.

There are C/C++ compiling tools for PalmOS, so conceivably it would

With a non-PDA phone, wouldn't it be possible to install the POP3 email
client mentioned by Steve Sobol? http/www.reqwireless.com
