Sleep the laptop, does it mean the laptop and the hard drive is safe to be carried around ? (not SSD drive)

or Hibernation ??

Hi,

When you put the laptop into Sleep Mode that means it's HDD is still spinning and vibrations can shorten the longevity of it. I would suggest just shutting down your laptop it you won't be using it and it would be carrying it around for hours.

I am sorry, I have to disagree with the above. It's possible when laptop is to put into APCI sleep mode s1, the HD still spins but nobody uses sleep mode s1 anymore. Everybody uses mode s3 or s4 (hibernate). Mode s1 still uses too much power, is a very shallow sleep mode, and laptop vendor specially don't go there, they want your snoozing laptop to use as little power as possible, 'les it wakes up with the battery depleted.

I am saying your laptop sleeps with the HD spin down, further I bet a dollar it also parks the head.

how do I know if my laptop going to sleep s1 or s2 s3 s4???. It's new with windows 8 preinstalled. I don't make any alternation to the default setting.

The BIOS may tell you but not always. There is no direct way to tell. I honestly feel you are over-thinking it. All am going to tell you is, I won't hesitate moving my laptop when sleep, been doing it since 1996.
