Smart tv to surround sound

Hi I have new Samsung smart tv. I have a 10 yr old built in Jensen surround sound. How do I get the tv to play through the Jensen?

Built-in do you mean in-wall speakers? nice... My Visio smart tv has an optical output which I connect directly to my old Onkyo 5.1 so all I needed was an optical SPDIF cable and I was good to go. Oh, if you need an AVR to connect them all up the Onkyo TX-SR373 is pretty good for the price.

Without model numbers we can't give you an exact answer.
If the Jensen only has analog inputs you can use the headphone out if the TV has one. Otherwise you will need to convert the optical audio output to analog or a coax digital input if the Jensen has one of those.
Check the TV manual on how to set up the optical output.

My tv has an optical as well but the stero unit doesn't. What will the other end of the optical look like?

There is a good guide to connections over here @ lifewire #07 is going to be the optical cable and socket on both ends.

Have a look at #08, those are the analog RCA cables and jacks, some TV also have those so that will be another option for good old stereo L and R connections into your stereo. If your TV only has the optical output, you can get a converter like this one which will convert to stereo out.

I was asking the question. Do you need auxiliary speakers time use to get surround sound from a smart TV?

If you mean add-on speakers or sound bar, actually yes, but they will take over the sound just like when you use an AV receiver and not use the TV speakers at all - something like the VIZIO - SmartCast 36" 5.1-Channel Soundbar System with 5" Wireless Subwoofer and Digital Amplifier for $200 it is not so bad, the sound bar contains the L, R and Center channel speakers while the subwoofer and rear surround speakers are separate.
