Simple, both must have the same interface type, order of preference:

HDMI
DVI
COMPONENT
VGA
S-VIDEO (A DIN CONNECTOR)
COMPOSITE

If TV and DVD player don't have the same interface then do us the favor of disclosing what do they have.
