So when can we buy 'em?

I've seen articles in here hailing the coming of new generation STBs with
the fancy multipath correction chips. It sounds like the tech I was waiting
for when I decided not to buy an STB right away 🙂.

So the question is - when will they actually be available? Anyone have any
model numbers? Prices? Reviews?

Just ask for one guarantee. That if your broadcasters all go with one SD
channel MPEG2 and everything else in MPEG4 you want an automatic upgrade.

According to this report it will begin later this year. USDTV will use
WM9 and a proprietary 8-VSB receiver. EMMIS broadcasting wants to have
all broadcasters follow the USDTV model. In fact they want to buy USDTV.
While any outcome of these proposals is possible the most efficient
would be for all broadcasters in a market to reduce their required
programming to one MPEG2 SD and use the rest in collaboration to deliver
a mix of SD, ED, HD and data. I proposed exactly this in 2000 here and
om AVSForum. My proposal required COFDM because the 8-VSB receivers were
not good enough and because I believed that mobile was a core
requirement for success. What has happened since is that non mobile
ventures in the UK and Berlin have become so successful and new 8-VSB
receivers so much better that the Emmis/USDTV ventures could be
successful in the US IMO.

The other TV service, USDTV, will use Windows Media 9 Series later this
year in 30 US markets to deliver 12 of the most popular cable channels
through "over-the-air" digital terrestrial antennas. USDTV wants to
provide an alternative for consumers who are looking for core cable TV
programming at an inexpensive price.

Any idea on the licensing cost of Windows Media 9?
