Hello, looking for a good quality laptop to get me through a PhD and lots of research that won't be a dinosaur within a year

1. What is your budget?
About $1500 Australian
2. What is the size of the notebook that you are considering?
15-17 inch
3. What screen resolution do you want?
Not sure on the technical side but a good HD one!
4. Do you need a portable or desktop replacement laptop?
probably prefer 15 inch but would go to 17 if it was worth it
5. How much battery life do you need?
another area I am willing to sacrfice but would expect 2 hours
6. Do you want to play games with your laptop? If so then please list the games that you want to with the settings that you want for these games. (Low,Medium or High)?
No games but may need to run some sophisticated software for research and uni purposes
7. What other tasks do you want to do with your laptop? (Photo / Video editing,watching movies, Etc.)
Photo editing, not much more than photoshop sort of stuff, watching movies, itunes, probably a little movie making but just for fun
8. How much storage (Hard Drive capacity) do you need?
500-640, 7200rpm
also about 8GB RAM

10. How long do you want to keep your laptop?
about 5 years minimum
11. What kind of Optical drive do you need? DVD ROM/Writer,Bluray ROM/Writer,Etc ?
DVD ROM/Reader/burner
12. Please tell us about the brands that you prefer to buy from them and the brands that you don't like and explain the reasons.
dont know a lot about it but happy with my old HP and don't mind ASUS, open minded really
Also keen on the intel i5 or i7, around 2.66 GHz

Really want something that I can work pretty hard and last a few years. As such I would rather go above the specs I require now because I know I will need something more powerful soon.
