Hi,

I have the STR DH550. I don't want to run HDMI cables through the receiver, because I have nice TV and don't want lag etc for gaming.

I have attached the HDMI cables from the sources to my TV (as always). I then have the Audio cables in the back of the receiver connect to the audio R/L of my TV. My receiver is on the TV input. However, there is no sound coming from my speakers. I looked at my tv setting and tried all of them, and still no sound. I tried doing analog as my sound as well as Auto etc...I tried changing from Analog, to 2st, auto, multi st, etc...

I am new to this all so feel free to think it is anything as simple as possible.

Thank you!

All good frank.

Your tv has no red & white audio outputs.

These are your options.

ARC which you've discovered.

Optical:

HDMI carries a higher bit stream than optical so you'll manage 5.1/7.1 uncompressed true hd audio. Optical does dolby/dts compressed, still sounds good though.

For a method replacement for your red & white scenario, see the green headphone out just below usb port? For that

Digital optical or HDMI would be better though.

the TV is the 900xe. The back of the TV looks like this: https://www.bestbuy.com/site/sony-65-class-64-5-diag--led-2160p-smart-4k-ultra-hd-tv-with-high-dynamic-range/5748207.p?skuId=5748207&ref=212&loc=1&ksid=ee2e3140-4502-4ddd-a99b-4982abd7ab7a&ksprof_id=16&ksaffcode=pg118761&ksdevice=c&lsft=ref:212,loc:2&gclid=Cj0KCQiA-qDTBRD-ARIsAJ_10yLZ65qLkBbpla5zkyAxsmCmN4ajYCSYSED9OVahyEq5afBpbM46meIaAmG0EALw_wcB.

I have the L/R plugged into the first two red and white plugs on the TV

They're for component in, you can see the white writing underneath describing this.

If you want audio out from that tele to the AVR look to the right says audio out. Either use 3.55mm headphones to L & R stereo plug or use optical.

For the audio out there's only one plug, that says digital audio out (the one on the top right of the box). I tried the white and red one in there, and no sound still. Should one of those work? If so, maybe it's also a setting on my receiver?

No not that side, look at the edge where your antenna and network cable is and follow that up.

The red white blue green are all inputs. Optical is output.

You have headphones out (green) which can work as an output to 3.5mm to rca.

Your AVR supports ARC too as well as your tv, could use another hdmi cable from (HDMI 3) ARC out to the HDMI out(ARC) on your AVR.

Your tv has many options for sound output, you were close but not in the right spot of the TV.

Your AVR will have a channel for each input like your TV does.

Hm i'm still a bit confused I think. I just tried multiple connections but nothing worked. Sorry to be annoying, but can you spell out exactly where to plug the red and white audio plugs in the TV into? Also if any TV settings that may affect this.

Also for the ARC, I did just figure that out. I plugged in the ARC from my receiver to the ARC HDMI port. Which I am guessing only sends sound from TV to receiver.

However, I would really like to figure out the Audio Wires still, just for the sake of it. Can you try to spell it out for me please where the White and Red wire should go?

Thanks again for all your help so far

ah okay, so my TV has no red & white outputs...interesting.

Oh okay I see now with the 3.5mm chord.

I'll keep the ARC for now then if that is what sounds like the 'best' quality.

Really thank you so much. Great lessons learned for me here. Hope you have a great night.

Best,
Frank
