Good Evening Ladies & Gents,

I have a friends laptop that recently got the black screen of death. School is just around the corner so i'm trying to troubleshoot this as much as i can, and being broke college kids, we're trying to avoid buying a new laptop.

So, The screen is always black right from the moment the machine is powered up. I hooked it up to my tv and i'm getting a display. I played around with the Fn + F combination keys but no luck there. I replaced the ram stick from my laptop to hers and no luck there either.

From what i'm reading, it could be a few things - inverter or bad motherboard, or bad video card etc etc.

Is there anything else i can do to narrow down the problem any further.
Your time and advice is much appreciated.
Thank you

Solution
Video card is fine otherwise external monitor wouldn't work either.
Motherboard is fine otherwise it wouldn't boot in to Windows.

It's the screen. Either the backlight or the inverter board (or both) needs replacing.
