Sound problems

I recently got my computer back from a PC performance, it had to have a system reset, done to it, and now that i have it back everything except the sound was working again.

The confusing thing is if i click the sound effect icon in the bottom right by the clock, and i click on the tab HRTF demo and click play, or do a speaker test, my computer plays sound, but then when i try to watch a video on youtube or listen to music on windows media, or something of the sort, it doesn't work.

On youtube and bbc iplayer it plays the video but doesn't play the sound and in windows media player when i click play it just comes up with ! next to all of the songs, as it flicks through them, then says "Windows Media Player encountered an unknown error. This can occur when another program or operating system component encounters a problem but does not communicate the nature of the problem to the Player." and when you click on more information it has: Error ID = 0xC00D11CD, Condition ID = 0x00000000

Can anyone help me as i have no idea what is wrong?

A quick look at the net shows it's Windows Media Player, try reinstalling WMP or updating it to WMP 11 and download a new codec here. http/www.free-codecs.com/download/K_lite_codec_pack.htm

ok, it now works on windows media player but, doesn't work on youtube still

I don't know what's causing it not to play youtube but it could be an activeX issue or maybe plug-ins for your browser, it could be other drivers as well.

It's very strange, i'm using firefox just incase that changes anything, but the same thing is happening on IE.

i checked my sound drivers and they're fine, i went on firefox addons-> pluggins-> Then Downloaded almost all of them, and the problem still remains.

Could it be a setting somewhere or something like that?

If you have your OS cd, you should try the system repair.

Just in case you don't know how...

Insert the disc then reboot and follow menu as if you were installing operating system. DO NOT use repair the first time it appears; only after you press F8 another option to repair your system will appear.

By selecting repair, windows will analyze the drive/s for existing installed OS; select the drive your OS resides and setup will install Windows files only but will not delete existing programs that already install. Files on your cache folder and outlook accounts and inbox files might be deleted so backup is necessary.
Note that your CD should have the same service pack as the one on your computer.

Make sure you have at least OEM version of the operating system and not the Rescue Disc or Restore Disc. IF you’re OS disc don’t have the same service pack, check the net how to slipstream service pack to windows. Windows activation may also require after installation so if this is too much of a hassle for you then…

At this point try reinstalling audio driver and other drivers/programs associated with audio and video and hope you’ll get lucky.

i haven't got my OS cd, i don't think my computer came with one (it's a MC3040)

i have tried downloading vedios off of the internet and they don't have sound, i've tried watching video on real player and windows media player and they have sound, i've tried to watch films and they have sound.

i really have no idea whats wrong with it, but i do have PCP on it (pc performance) which is where it was fixed origanlly, would you reccommend i take it back to them again, to see if they can find out whats wrong with it?

If it won't cause you money then take it back. I'm positive that a driver/codec is not registering properly. What's your internet browser?

You might want to try other ones. Mozilla, Opera, Crome or the new IE8.

I had the same situation at one point and it's drivers/codecs; I can't remember how it fix it self but onetime I got a BSOD and restarted the system and my security stop working and so I reinstall the program and use registry mechanic to clean registry, updated the computer and next thing I know I was watching banned commercials from youtube. My BSOD cause by a damage USB drive.

If you can, try reinstalling the other drivers back. It might help the system setup shared files like your audio drivers and video drivers.
